Stanley Whittingham in den 1970er Jahren das Konzept der Lithium-Ionen-Batterien.<br>1991 stellten Sony und Asahi Kasei die ersten kommerziellen Akkus dieser Art her. Die ersten Akkus kamen im Bereich Verbraucherelektronik \u2013 z. B. in Mobiltelefonen \u2013 zum Einsatz. Aufbauend auf dem Erfolg und der erwiesenen Zuverl\u00e4ssigkeit dieser Lithium-Ionen-Akkus haben zahlreiche Unternehmen mittlerweile gr\u00f6\u00dferformatige Zellen f\u00fcr den Einsatz in Energiespeichersystemen entwickelt. Akkus werden verwendet, um elektrische Energie zu speichern, wenn ein Strom\u00fcberschuss erzeugt wird, und um Strom in das Netz abzugeben, wenn er am dringendsten ben\u00f6tigt wird. Die Racks befinden sich entweder in eigens zu diesem Zweck angefertigten Containern oder in Geb\u00e4uden. \u00dcber Wechselrichter, die Gleichstrom in Wechselstrom umwandeln und umgekehrt, werden sie an das Stromnetz angeschlossen.
