SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 (December 7, 2010)<\/strong> \u2013 Recurrent Energy, a leading solar project developer and generating company, today announced the commercial operation of a five megawatt (MW) solar power system in San Francisco atop the Sunset Reservoir. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is purchasing the renewable energy generated by the system under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this one project, we are tripling the amount of solar power used by San Francisco\u2019s local government and powering up California\u2019s largest municipal solar array,\u201d said Mayor Newsom. \u201cSan Francisco is leading by example towards California\u2019s future of green jobs and a growing economy built on renewable energy and a cleaner environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The solar power system more than triples San Francisco\u2019s total solar generating capacity, and consists of 24,000 solar panels. The solar power will be used by the City and County of San Francisco\u2019s municipal services and facilities such as the airport, lightrail, and city buildings. The project, which was awarded through a competitive bid process, leveraged a 30 percent federal tax credit available to the private sector to dramatically lower project costs.<\/p>\n
