De eerste batterijen werden gebruikt voor consumentenelektronica, zoals in mobiele telefoons. Voortbouwend op het succes en de bewezen betrouwbaarheid van deze lithiumionbatterijen hebben veel bedrijven grotere cellen ontwikkeld voor gebruik in toepassingen voor energieopslag. Batterijen worden gebruikt om energie op te slaan wanneer er een overvloed aan elektriciteit wordt geproduceerd, en om energie naar het elektriciteitsnet te voeren wanneer deze het meest nodig is. Deze racks bevinden zich in speciaal hiervoor gebouwde containers of gebouwen en zijn via omvormers verbonden met het stroomnet (waarbij gelijkstroom wordt omgezet in wisselstroom en vice versa).
